Coming in 2018-2019 BYOD

What is BYOD?                                Bring Your Own Device

Who will BYOD?                              Middle School Students (6th, 7th and 8th Graders)

When does BYOD begin?                The 2018-2019 School Year

Why BYOD?

BYOD will allow us to provide our students with the opportunity of integrating their daily use of technology into their academic career and help them fully complete projects and assignments without missing out on instructional time in the classroom.

Middle school students will begin using their own iPad at the onset of the 2018-2019 school year.

We suggest the following iPad:

iPad Air 2 or higher with Wi-Fi ONLY and iOS 10 or better

Students will be required to bring earphones.  Keyboards will be optional.

Teachers should spend their time in the classroom teaching and not providing technology support.  In that spirit, we strongly encourage our families and students to adhere to the recommended platforms and the school will support our students in the effective use of the devices described above.  Families may choose to use other technology, but should realize it may limit their student’s ability to participate in assigned technology based requirements.  Students will be expected to complete prescribed assignments.

This requirement is two years away, so why are you informing me of this now?

We want you to be able to plan ahead.  Know that when your child is in sixth grade a technology device will be required.

Other details…

Students in preschool through fifth grade have NO requirement for a device, and in fact will not be allowed to bring one to school.

DO NOT purchase the current recommendation for a younger student thinking it will be their middle school device.  Our recommended device will change as technology advances.  Once a device is purchased for a sixth grade student, it will be the only device needed for their middle school years.

While BYOD goes into effect for the 2018-2019 school year, students may bring their own device during the 2017-2018 school year.

Look for more information to come out regarding required apps and consequences of misuse.

What about the current iPads?

The iPads currently owned by the school are quickly becoming outdated.  They will be used in lower grade classrooms as teachers see fit.

Who should I direct my questions to regarding BYOD?

Our Curriculum Specialist, Josie Hester, will take any questions you may have.
